This post is taken from a comment posted on facebook by current resident Victoria Summers about the history of the name "Doty Road", and answers from some long-time/former residents.  If you have more information on this road please feel free to post in the Comments section. Thanks to all for helping tell the story of Oakland - more to come!

Victoria Summers:
It's obvious that many streets have collective names....the college streets, the tree streets, Indian names etc. And the obvious (Lakeview Terrace, River Road....near the water) But the only street name that really baffles me is Doty Road.

Pete Emmons: The Doty family were early settlers in Oakland. One of the places they lived was on W. Oakland Ave. across from the intersection of Doty Rd. Later the Romaines lived there; the house is now gone.

Ron Romaine: Wm. Doty built the Post -Doty house in the 1860's. It was bought on land that once belonged to Zachariah K Post.  Doty Rd., formerly called Willow St., was actually a cow pass for Doty through his apple orchard (Pleasureland). Doty also built "The Gate house" on Pool Hollow Rd. Wallace B Romaine purchased the Post-Doty house in 1904 & lived there until his death in 1919. His son B Demarest Romaine, my father, then lived there until his death in 1964. I lived there until I sold it in 1989. The new owner rented out the house for one year, then tore it down.

New Format For The Community Historians Page

Due to some spamming on the old forum page, a blog has been created instead with authors being invited to post. We are excited about the interest generated for Oakland's history and, in large part, have facebook to thank for that interest.  Some of the posts you are familiar with there will be shifted to this blog page, with new entries by people who are familiar with the town's history and stories.  And if you are one who has a story to tell, please use the "Contact Us" page to get a conversation started about how to be a guest blogger.

A NOTE ABOUT COMMENTS: Please remember that all comments are public and as such, care should be taken to be respectful, non-confrontational, and sensitive to those who may have involvement in or knowledge of events, no matter how long ago they occurred. Thank you for helping us keep this blog as a memory to be shared and enjoyed by all.

We have invited various residents (past and present) to share in their knowledge of Oakland's history.  We hope you enjoy learning more about your town!  We'll tell a little bit about the writers too, as soon as we get their info.
