Becoming a member of the Oakland [NJ] Historical Society goes a long way to supporting the efforts to preserve Oakland's history and the stories of those connected to the Borough. Member dues support Society events and educational programs, promote awareness of the historic value of sites like the Hendrik Van Allen home and farm, helps us maintain and build upon our local history collections, and support the youth and adult educational activities of our many volunteers.
Membership year is July 1–June 30. Join anytime as support is needed year-round!
Individual Membership: $10 / year
Family Membership: $15 / year
Student Membership (13-18 years of age): $5 / year
Friends of OHS: $20 / year
Sponsors: $100+ / year

The Oakland Historical Society (OHS) is a 100% volunteer educational nonprofit. Funding comes from Memberships, donations, and contributions of time and materials from our dedicated Volunteers. We can't do what we do without YOU!
OHS Membership Benefits
OHS Members fall into two categories, OHS Member and Active OHS Member (includes voting rights). These categories are based on the amount of time you wish to contribute to the organization’s activities:
— All OHS Members are invited to attend the semi-annual meeting events in January and August.
— All OHS Members will receive invitations to Members-only events.
— All OHS Members have the option to participate in the various OHS Volunteer Committees (below).
— Active OHS Members are those Members who have volunteered for three or more OHS events during our Membership year (July 1–June 30) are eligible to vote during Society meetings and on special issues.
Volunteer Opportunities + Committees
Interested in volunteering for the OHS? Below are our various committees and the work that they do:
Community Events Committee
Plans and operates the OHS’s monthly open house events and other community activities.
Research & Publishing Committee
Performs historic research and writes articles and other works about Oakland's history.
Educational Programs Committee
Responsible for planning and operating educational programs for adults and schoolchildren.
Architecture, Archeology, and Historic Preservation (AAHP) Committee
Researches historic buildings, sites, and cemeteries in Oakland and the surrounding area. The committee is also active in historic preservation efforts.
Museum & Archive Committee
Operates the house museum and archive, and it is responsible for maintaining the collections, house, grounds, and records and keeping them in good working order.
OHS Leadership
Active OHS Members are invited to serve in leadership positions with the OHS. Terms run for two years and include: President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Unelected positions include Archivist, Business Manager, Garden Director, House Curator, Parliamentarian, Publicist, Webmaster, and others.
